Ridge Gourd 500g is a ridged green gourd widely used in Indian home cooking. It is commonly cooked until soft in sabzi, dal, sambar, kootu and regional vegetable dishes, where its mild flavour works well with onion, tomato, lentils, coconut and everyday spices.

The 500g pack is useful for a household curry, a dry vegetable side or a mixed dish with dal. Ridge gourd is usually washed, the prominent ridges or tougher outer skin are trimmed or peeled as needed, and the flesh is then sliced or chopped before cooking.

Ridge Gourd is part of MyLocalMart's Gourds & Pumpkin collection within the wider Vegetables range, alongside other vegetables commonly used in Indian curries, stews and side dishes.

What Is Ridge Gourd?

Ridge gourd is an edible young gourd from the luffa family. It has a distinctly ridged outer surface and soft flesh that becomes tender during cooking. In India it is known by several regional names, including turai or torai in Hindi, beerakaya in Telugu, peerkangai in Tamil and heerekai in Kannada.

The vegetable is normally cooked rather than eaten raw. It can be prepared as a dry sabzi, combined with dal, cooked in sambar or kootu, or used in chutney preparations. Its gentle flavour makes it a useful base for mustard seeds, cumin, chilli, curry leaves, garlic, onion, tomato, coconut and lentils without competing with the seasoning.

Why Choose Ridge Gourd 500g?

Ridge Gourd 500g is a practical choice if you:

Prepare turai, beerakaya or peerkangai dishes at home.
Want a gourd for simple curries and dry sabzi.
Cook dal, sambar or kootu with vegetables.
Prefer vegetables that soften readily in pan-cooked dishes.
Need a 500g pack for everyday household cooking.

The pack size suits one larger vegetable dish or several smaller portions depending on the recipe and how the gourd is trimmed.

Popular Ways to Use Ridge Gourd

Ridge gourd is commonly prepared as:

Turai or torai sabzi with onion, tomato and spices.
Beerakaya curry or kura in Telugu-style cooking.
Peerkangai kootu with lentils and coconut.
Sambar with ridge gourd pieces.
Ridge gourd cooked with moong dal or other lentils.
A simple stir-fry or poriyal-style side dish.
Coconut-based vegetable curry.
Chutney or pachadi preparations, including recipes that use suitably prepared peel.

Because the vegetable releases moisture as it cooks, many dishes need only a modest amount of added water. Cook until the pieces are tender but not needlessly overcooked.

How to Cook Ridge Gourd: Simple Sabzi

Ridge gourd, also called turai or luffa, becomes soft and tender when cooked and releases a little natural moisture, so you usually do not need much water. Wash the 500 g vegetable, trim the ends and peel away the hard ridges. Cut it into small, even pieces. The soft seeds can usually be cooked with the flesh, but remove any large, hard seeds.

Heat oil in a pan and add cumin seeds, followed by chopped onion, garlic and green chilli. Once the onion softens, add turmeric, coriander powder, chilli powder and salt. Stir in the chopped ridge gourd, cover the pan and cook on low to medium heat for around 8–12 minutes. Stir occasionally until tender. Remove the lid near the end so excess moisture evaporates.

Serve the sabzi with roti, chapati or rice. You can also add tomatoes, moong dal or a little coconut for extra flavour. Store fresh ridge gourd in the refrigerator and use it while firm.
